大气中甲烷与非甲烷总烃的浓度约为1.8ppmv和30ppbv。非甲烷总烃，是指除甲烷以外所有可挥发的碳氢化合物(主要是c2-c8)，其组分十分复杂，它主要来源于汽油燃烧、垃圾焚烧、溶剂蒸发和废物提炼等。当大气中非甲烷总烃超过一定的浓度时，除直接对人体健康有害外，在一定的条件下经日光照射还能产生光化学烟雾，对环境和人类造成危害。因此对环境空气、厂界等区域进行非甲烷总烃的监控和管制非常有必要，其中，我国《大气污染物综合排放标准》的非甲烷总烃的厂界浓度标准为5mg/m³。

我国环境保护部关于环境空气(hj604-2017)与固定污染源中(hj38-2017)非甲烷总烃的测定方法为气相色谱法，利用差减法测定非甲烷总烃含量。即分别在总烃柱和甲烷柱上测得样气中的总烃和甲烷含量，将总烃含量减去甲烷含量即得到非甲烷总烃的含量。

The Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection's determination method for non-methane total hydrocarbons in ambient air (hj604-2017) and stationary pollution sources (hj38-2017) is gas chromatography, and the content of non-methane total hydrocarbons is determined by subtraction method. That is, the total hydrocarbon and methane contents in the sample gas are measured on the total hydrocarbon column and the methane column respectively, and the total non-methane hydrocarbon content is obtained by subtracting the methane content from the total hydrocarbon content.
