The 2021 National Ecological Environment Monitoring Plan specifies that "the national prefecture level and above cities shall carry out ambient air NMHC monitoring", and requires "automatic monitoring". At present, there are two common methods for determining NMHC concentration on the market, one is the difference method, and the other is the direct method (also known as the "direct method"). The former was widely adopted in early years in China, while the latter has been concerned, valued and applied in recent two years, and will become a regulatory trend.
The term direct method is relative to subtraction method. As the name implies, with this method, NMHC is the value directly measured. To put it simply, after pretreatment (preconcentration+methane separation), the sample enters the FID detector to directly analyze the NMHC concentration value. In the past two years, this analysis method has been widely concerned and valued by the academia and regulators, and was finally adopted by the Technical Specifications for Continuous Automatic Monitoring of Non methane Total Hydrocarbons in Ambient Air (Trial) (ZSQZ (2021) No. 61).
