This standard specifies the gas chromatography method for determining alkylmercury (methylmercury, ethylmercury) in water. This standard is applicable to the determination of alkyl mercury in surface water and wastewater. This method enriches alkylmercury in water with ryuki cotton, analyzes it with sodium chloride solution, extracts it with toluene, and determines it with a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector. The actual minimum detected concentration varies with instrument sensitivity and water sample matrix effect. When 1L of water sample is taken, methylmercury is usually detected at 10ng/L, while ethylmercury is detected at 20ng/L. Sulfur-containing organic compounds (thiols, thioethers, thiophenols, etc.) in the sample can be enriched and extracted, and accumulate in the chromatographic column during the analysis process, which reduces the separation efficiency of the chromatographic column and interferes with the determination of alkyl mercury. Regularly injecting a saturated solution of mercuric chloride benzene into the chromatographic column can remove these interferences and restore the separation efficiency of the column.
