Alumina packed column refers to a chromatographic column with a stationary phase of alumina (Al ₂ O3) particles. These alumina particles are tightly and uniformly packed in a metal (usually stainless steel) or glass column.
Main Features
Strong polarity stationary phase: Alumina is a polar solid adsorbent with extremely high surface area and surface activity.
Adsorption chromatography: Its separation principle is mainly based on the difference in adsorption desorption ability of sample components on the surface of alumina, rather than their distribution in the liquid phase (such as common capillary columns such as HP-5 and Wax).
High separation efficiency: It has excellent separation ability for C1 to C6 hydrocarbon isomers (including alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes), and can separate many compounds that are difficult to separate by capillary columns, such as n-butane and isobutane.
Adjustable activity: The surface activity (i.e. adsorption capacity) of alumina can be treated by deactivation, usually by coating a small amount of inorganic salts (such as Na ₂ SO ₄, KCl) or water to reduce its activity, in order to avoid irreversible adsorption or catalytic reactions of certain components (such as olefins).
