1,2,4-苯三甲酸酐作为优良的耐热性、耐候性增塑剂的原料，其消费量也在不断增加，在总消费量中，约90%以上用于聚氯乙烯增塑剂偏苯三甲酸二辛酯的生产。用作聚氯乙烯增塑剂，能改善聚氯乙烯的耐热、耐寒、耐溶剂及电绝缘性能。其次用于制造聚酯树脂及聚酰亚胺树脂、水溶性聚酯树脂、水溶性聚氨酯树脂、水溶性氨基醇酸树脂以及高级航空润滑油、电力电容器浸渍油、粒料粘结剂、施胶剂、消烟剂、瞬时粘结剂等。1,2,4-苯三甲酸酐还可用作环氧树脂固化剂，反应活性很高，固化物热变形温度198℃，具有优良的机械性能、电性能和耐药品性。适用于环氧浇注件及层压制品耐热绝缘层压物等。
