Benzoic acid has a wider application prospect in the removal of ammonia. 添加剂类物质的产品质量和合理使用关系到食品质量安全和大众健康。苯甲酸（Benzoic acid，简称BZA）是一种固态、无腐蚀性的弱有机酸，***初用于工业，作为染料中间体、油漆合成、钢铁防腐剂和增塑剂等的原料，后来作为防腐剂用于食品和药物生产。我国GB2760―1996《食品添加剂使用卫生标准》中对其在各类食品中的使用限量有详细的规定，通常的添加量为0.2～1.0g/kg。随着饲料工业的发展，苯甲酸得到进一步的应用，除防腐作用外，还具有降低家畜肠道氨气排放的作用，称为除氨剂。这种作用对于目前备受人们关注的环境大气中温室气体排放量的减少非常有用。联合国粮农组织不久前发布的题为《牲畜的巨大阴影：环境问题与选择》报告指出，人类活动产生的氨有64％来自畜牧业。苯甲酸的除氨作用使得苯甲酸有了更广泛的使用前景。饲料中苯甲酸的使用量通用为：作为防腐剂，添加量小于或等于1.0 g/kg；作为除氨剂，添加量在5～10 g/kg。
我国卫生部《食品安全性毒理学评价标准》的毒性划分规定，苯甲酸属于实际无毒类。美国FDA规定，苯甲酸（FDA，§184.1021，2000）被列为一般公认的安全类食品添加剂（GRAS）。笔者发现苯甲酸在由甲苯催化氧化的合成过程中，由于过度氧化会产生的一类有毒物质，称为联苯类物质，包括联苯（BP）、2－甲基联苯（2MBP）、3－甲基联苯（3MBP）、4－甲基联苯（4MBP）和苯甲酸苄酯（BB）。它们的毒性见表1。联苯类物质属于低毒类。联苯的急性毒性为：小鼠经口LD50值为3 280 mg/kg，兔LD50值为2 410 mg/kg；苯甲酸苄酯在大鼠中的LD50值为500 mg/kg。甲基取代的联苯没有相应的数据，目前对于这类物质在苯甲酸中的残留含量没有明确的规定。
