Tetrabutyltin is an organic tin compound with the chemical formula C16H36Sn and CAS accession number 1461-25-2. This substance is a colorless to slightly yellow oily liquid with a density of 1.057 g/cm ³ (25 ℃), a melting point of -97 ℃, a boiling point of 127-145 ℃ (10 mmHg) or 275.3 ℃ (760 mmHg), a flash point of about 107 ℃ (225 ℉), a refractive index of 1.473 (20 ℃), insoluble in water, soluble in most organic solvents.
Its chemical properties are mainly manifested as Sn-C bonds being easily broken by halogens, hydrogen halide acids, and mineral acids, and decomposing to produce irritating smoke when heated to 265 ℃. Mainly used in the manufacture of organic heat stabilizer intermediates such as dibutyltin oxide, and as rust inhibitors, stabilizers, polymeric catalysts, and gasoline explosion-proof agents. The preparation method involves synthesizing 1-chlorobutane and anhydrous tin tetrachloride as raw materials.
